"Every child deserves a champion - an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be." - Rita F. Pierson -
Educators have the opportunity to be a positive force in children’s lives starting during the most critical period of their development. Children deserve motivated, passionate teachers who are their student’s biggest advocates and guide them in reaching their full potential. Children have and always will be our future. Each child is truly a unique, special individual that has within them immense promise to make an impact on the future of this country.
An early childhood educator’s role is to guide children’s cognitive, social-emotional, language, and physical development. The focus should and needs to be on the children. Their passions, hobbies, and experiences should be considered, because that will help to motivate them and allow them to truly learn and develop key skills to help them grow. It is critical to help children find the joy in learning and create a safe, warm atmosphere where children are excited to come, and be apart of, on a regular basis.
It takes a teacher who believes in the value of connection and developing positive relationships with their students to make an impact in their lives for the better. Once teachers have established partnerships with each individual student they have opened the doors to significant learning. It truly makes all the difference in the world when a teacher focuses on building relationships and trust with each of their students on an individual level first. As an educator I believe it is important to let each child know that you care not only about their academic progress, but you genuinely care about them as an individual person and will always be their biggest champion. Furthermore, relationships are not only about teacher to student, but student to student as well. Building a community of learners is a practice that is very powerful, and has the ability to make a tremendous difference in a classroom. Introducing lessons that encourage peer collaboration and offer ample opportunities for cooperative learning support children’s active participation and engagement.
The value of relationships doesn’t stop at the classroom door, but needs to extend outside the classroom and into the community. Family has a direct influence on the lives of children, and they are incredibly important to the development and growth of a child. Keeping families informed, facilitating family-to-family support, and integrating families in the program are all ways to build positive partnerships with families and give them a significant role in the classroom and school environment. Active family engagement is powerful and proven to greatly benefit children’s academic and educational success starting at the early ages and continuing throughout the later years of a child’s schooling career. Getting to know the community and developing connections between the school, community, and family is a complex part of each child’s development.
